Practical Christianity

Poem
Putting It Into Practice
B. MONTEIRO

With salesmanship and politics,

False friendship o’er a backstab cloaks,

Amidst a shallow generation

Disillusionment provokes.

Souls are hungry, souls are thirsty,

Seeking faith that’s more than theory,

Seeking truth, they fi nd a void

When hollow pretense makes them weary.

Let us instead be genuine folks

Who search out precious souls in need,

And understand their inner longing

For a living truth to heed.

Where is theory put in action?

Where are doctrines lived in life?

Where are harmony and kindness

Overruling self and strife?

There’s no such ship on spiritual seas

Without the power of Christ as Lord.

Never can it e’er exist

Without His grace and love aboard.

The ship that’s going through has life;

And never will it suffer wreck.

Yet why? Its motto ever is

“Be vigilant! All hands on deck!”

The voyagers are ever vibrant;

Choosing faith, they know no fear.

And where is such great courage found?

—Their Captain is the Saviour dear!

Put in practice—that’s the aim,

His every sacred word hold fast.

’Tis only that way we can fi nd

Safe harbor in His heav’n at last.
