Lord, Save Me
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Matthew 14:30
God always hears the plea for help. “Amid the anthems of the celestial choir, God hears the cries of the weakest human being. We pour out our heart's desire in our closets, we breathe a prayer as we walk by the way, and our words reach the throne of the Monarch of the universe. They may be inaudible to any human ear, but they cannot die away into silence, nor can they be lost through the activities of business that are going on. Nothing can drown the soul's desire. It rises above the din of the street, above the confusion of the multitude, to the heavenly courts. It is God to whom we are speaking, and our prayer is heard.” COL 174
Several years ago, during my time as a canvasser in the city of Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I had to go pick up books for our delivery. My father and I began our drive to the depot in the city of Rio de Janeiro. On our way back, the car was heavy and loaded with books. We proceeded with care and at a slow pace, due to the weight of the books.
The trip was going well that spring afternoon. The winding road had been recently built, and the car made smooth progress on the black, compacted asphalt. The awe-inducing view of the mountains and forests, the ocean with all its brilliance, and the calmness of the region made for a peaceful and enjoyable trip. We talked and made many plans without knowing what was ahead.
As our journey continued, the weather changed. Clouds covered the sky and turned our trip into a sombre one. A drizzling rain sprinkled on the road and made it slippery. Our speed was reduced even further.
Large tractor-trailers and buses travel on these roads, and sometimes oil drips from their tanks and stays on the road until the next rainfall. Then when the rain begins to come, the effect of the oil on the road is always tragic. Unless there is a rainfall is sufficient to wash the road clean, the road in these places becomes slippery, and sometimes fatal.
We encountered such a situation. Our car slipped on a curve and the direction of the vehicle was lost. All efforts to regain control of the vehicle were in vain. We began to spin on the road. On the third time around, the car was positioned with its rear towards the precipice and continued moving. It was then that my father cried out, “Lord, Save us!”
A supernatural power took over me, and I pulled the hand break. About three meters away from the edge, the car stopped. We had been saved by another miracle that Christ performed in our lives.
We have no doubts that the angel of the Lord stopped the car that day. He became our wall of protection when everything was lost to human eyes. Our lives were graciously saved by the Saviour.
The experience of that afternoon was fixed in our minds.
Even today the cry, “Lord, save us!” is remembered with profound gratitude. “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.” Psalm 34:17.
